I want to sell my car privately....advice please (UK)?

I have a 2001 Y reg Peugeot 306 1.6 Meridian 20k Miles and very good condition etc.... A car dealer offered me ';book price'; of 拢2450 assuming it was faultless as I said it was (I didnt take it to dealer). Everyone says that selling it privately is going to get me more money for it. I live outskirts of SW London if location affects price.

How much do you think I should aim to get???

And any advice for the actual selling of it, as in the buyers cheque bouncing. How would you sell privately?I want to sell my car privately....advice please (UK)?
I think you should take alook on autotraders website, Aim for about 拢3000. When I bought my second hand car earlier this year it was the first place I looked.

Accept Cash only, solves the problem of bouncing cheques.I want to sell my car privately....advice please (UK)?
If a dealer is offering you 2450 its probably worth more especially in London. I live in Hampshire and car prices are outrageous- i am going to go the West Country to buy a newer one because i can get a better deal. Advertise in local papers or shops. Ebay is ok but expensive, and you get a lot of time wasters. If you do it that way put a reserve price on it. As for cheques only take bankers drafts because they have come directly from the bank and cannot bounce.
try your local area auto trader at a price they will produce a photo together with your written advert and as far as a cheque bouncing, dont let the vehicle change hands until the cheque has cleared into your account, good luck
When I sell a car , I use the Auto Trader to get the best price , with its internet site all of the uk can view you vehicle !

It does make a difference where you are located in the uk to the price of the vehicle , the further south you go the price generaly rises !

look in the Auto Trader to get a price at what cars are up for , then depending on what you think put your car somewhere int he middle of the price range . Also buy the Auto Trader and phone round a few of the cars that you think are similar to yours and ask if there has been much interest , that way you will know if the price is too high or too cheap .

You could always try ebay , but you have to be ready to accept what people will bid and pay , it can be good or bad

hope that is of some help , good luck selling your car !
You can sell it to your any friend or write it in newspaper.
rule number 1. do not accept a cheque.

2.price the car for more than you expect to get.

3.dealers will roughly knock off 拢400 from book price so they can get their cut.

advertise it for 拢2700 and be prepared to drop to about 拢2500 but dont drop 拢200 in one go reduce in increments of 拢25.

Insist on a bankers draught or cash.

Don't. First you pay tax. Then the people have problems and you do too. Third do you want strangers to show up? or not? Dealerships are fair no matter what anybody thinks.
Your car was one of the last 306 to be made. It was built in coventry West Midlands in 2000. It most likely is metallic blue in colour, some were red, and will sell fairly easily even though it is not a high specification.

Your car has two downfloors.

Firstly it's the petrol model and not the cheapest insurance for youngsters, and the tax is 拢160 a year, so they won't be keen to buy it.

Even though it is a great model and looks like a modern design. It is really a young families car. History will sell this car easily, without that, it's mileage is dubious.

Secondly, the newer 307 is a much better car overall and a good 1.9 diesel with 60K miles can be found for 拢3,000-4,000 which will be much cheaper to run and will still do another 50K easily.

Your car's exceptionally low mileage is good, but it is an old design now, it has been under used, but is not a two year old car.

Although it has some airbags and similar features, it is not as good a performer in crash test than the 307, which is a safer design.

I think 拢2,500 is a good price for your car, I don't think someone would pay 拢3,000 because they can get a 307 for that cash or a Megane Diesel or an Astra diesel for that matter.

Personally I would advertise it on the excellent Auto Trader website for 拢2,550. FPSH 20K.

They also have lots of pages of advice for you on how to do the transaction and how to make the car most presentable and how NOT to get scammed.
Take it!
A dealer will expect to make at least 拢600 on the sale of your vehicle so pitch your price around the 拢3000 and be prepared to come down a little. It makes the buyer feel good and you get a reasonable settlement from it. You must be honest about the car as any inherent faults subsequently found in the first 2/3 weeks can be a reason for full refund or a partial refund. Because you are selling privately does not mean that you can withhold details of faults. If you take a cheque do not release the car until it has been cleared. If you sell in the morning and bank the cheque with a fast clearance request it can be cleared by mid afternoon. Not weekends though. There is a small fee for this service at the bank and it is well worth paying it. Do not forget to complete and send off the owners registration details as it is your responsibility. Good luck.
Put your car up on Loot, Auto Traders, Gumtree (free) or Ebay. Theirs more but thats all I can think of, good luck!
