I'm at the initial stages of planning a trip to California. Travelling from the UK. Need advice please.?

What airport should i be looking to fly to ?

Approximately how much would it cost ?

Planning to travel at the end of September / start of October.

Any general advice, as in sightseeing stuff, festivals, good website links would be well appreciated.

I suggest that you use San Francisco as your base and from there plan small trips to the neighboring cities, regions. San Francisco as such is probably one of the nicest spots in California. I also recommend San Diego, although it is so far in the south. It is a nice city with a high quality of life. And then don't forget the wine regions of California... wine over there is so cheap and good compared to prices in Europe. Mind, though, that the US dollar's exchange rate is rising again.I'm at the initial stages of planning a trip to California. Travelling from the UK. Need advice please.?
Since you have lots of time to make your plans, I'd recommend looking into a vacation rental for your stay in California. I haven't stayed at a hotel in years, since I found out about vacation rentals... the cost is about the same or less than a hotel, and it's so much more relaxing to stay in a home than a crowded noisy hotel.

I've always used Owner Direct Vacation Rentals, and have never had a bad experience. Once you find the place you want to stay, they'll put you right in touch with the owner, and you can talk to them, so there won't be any surprises when you arrive.

Just go to Owner Direct Vacation Rentals page for California, here: http://www.ownerdirect.com/accommodation鈥?/a> and start browsing around the area(s) you're thinking of visiting. I bet you'll find a great place to stay!

Have a good time on your trip over here!
I went last year in June to San Francisco for 7 days to see relatives. Booked the whole thing via travelocity ( http://www.travelocity.co.uk/ ). Cost around æ‹¢1500 for the whole deal (flight, motel, car hire and spending money) but yours may be cheaper because of the time of year and the fact you can book the flight well ahead and take advantage of super apex fares. Mine was a last minute thing and sorted within a couple of days. If it's your first time there I'd recommend the San Francisco Bay area over LA. Used to go to LA a lot on business and it's OK if you know the ropes but not a great introduction to CA.
If you have the budget for an ';open jaws'; itinerary, I'd suggest flying into San Francisco and working your way down to San Diego,

Include the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey on your list of places to visit.
